University of Missouri System and Segal Group Communications Practice Win 2015 IABC Gold Quill Award

The University of Missouri System received an Award of Excellence for its Annual Enrollment Campaign from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) 2015 Gold Quill Awards Program. The program recognizes business communication excellence globally, and is acknowledged as one of the most prestigious awards programs in the industry (

The University’s Annual Enrollment Campaign was designed by the University’s Human Resources team and The Segal Group’s Communications Practice to inform 19,000 benefits-eligible faculty and staff about medical plan changes and inspire them to take action. According to Kelli Holland, Manager, Communications and Education, Human Resources, University of Missouri System, “We were facing financial challenges in our ability to provide benefits to employees and retirees. One of our mandates was to explore new concepts in how medical plan options and wellness programs could be designed to reward healthy behaviors. When we also learned that more than half of our employees thought they were “somewhat unhealthy,” we knew we had to make changes to our medical plan to both control costs and encourage healthy behaviors.”

The University worked with The Segal Group to identify three strategies:

  • Pilot a Custom Network Plan in the greater Columbia (MO) area that would combine lower costs with high-quality care from providers affiliated with the University’s Health System;
  • Increase financial incentives offered to employees for wellness program participation; and,
  • Implement an active annual enrollment process requiring every benefits-eligible employee to either choose a medical plan or waive coverage.

Katherine Anttila, Senior Communications Consultant, The Segal Group, commented on the enrollment campaign: “We had to ensure that employees understood the medical plan changes, were aware of the need to take action, were encouraged to improve their health, and were provided with the resources they needed to make informed choices. The University employed a wide range of media including multiple face-to-face events, direct mail, a dedicated website and decision center, mass emails, a whiteboard video, automated phone calls and social media posts.”

Holland concluded, “The campaign was so successful that most of our targets were met and, in several cases, exceeded. In addition, employees who switched from the PPO to the Custom Network Plan will save $2.8 million in premium costs and another $2.1 million for the University – just in 2015 alone.”
